After going to France for my 18th Birthday in August, but failing to see the inside of the Palace of Versailles, my Mum and I decided to go back for a long weekend in November. This was a much quieter time, therefore we didn't feel rushed to get through the crowds and we spent more time exploring.

We stayed at a hotel that was only minutes away from the palace, which was very convenient. It also got me thinking about all the people that must live in Versailles and be able to see the grand palace everyday! I suppose it wouldn't be much of a novelty to them if they spent their whole lives there.

The weather of course wasn't the best, so I would recommend seeing the gardens in summer (as we had done previously), but for viewing the interior the weather didn't matter all that much - although my coat didn't have a hood and my hair got drenched on the way back to the hotel!

Stepping through the grand gates of the Palace of Versailles is like entering another realm, one almost frozen in time, where everything gave off opulence and I was so excited to be able to see it all for myself!

As I wandered through the Hall of Mirrors, I was struck with awe by the sheer magnificence of the place. The gorgeous chandeliers, ornate ceilings, and intricate paintings gave me such a picture of how people would have lived in this huge, extravagant place - even if it is well known that some of the hygiene aspects of the palace were not the best!

The intricate furniture of the royal apartments and rooms, the gilded walls and elaborate decor spoke of a time when luxury knew no bounds. I am beyond glad that the palace was preserved even through times such as the French Revolution, for it is a history lovers dream to be able to step into such amazing old buildings and be almost transported back in time, learning all about things first hand.

When I had ventured out into the gardens back in the summer, I saw the Grand Canal, which was lined with statues and fountains that added to the grandeur of the surroundings. The symmetrical layout of the gardens and the attention to detail was my favourite part, as it showcases the artistry and vision of the designers; but I am also a big nature lover, so seeing a massive, seemingly endless garden, all in bloom with magnificent water fountains, was very special.

In November, the gardens were very different, however. A lot of the statues were covered to protect them from the winter weather and the rain made it a bit miserable looking, but looking in the Grand Trianon and then the Petit Trianon, cheered us up. Well that was until we tried to find our way out of the grounds and ended up walking along a long stretch of road nearly 3 times in the pouring rain!

The Palace of Versailles once stood as a testament to the power and prestige of the French monarchy, but it is now only a reminder of that distant time when excess and extravagance reigned and hopefully it will serve as a reminder for many more centuries to come, to continue teaching people about history and how differently the rich lived compared to the poor.

The Palace of Versailles has left a mark on me forever, reminding me of the enduring legacy of a time long since past, yet still there to see in its grandeur and splendour to this day.
